SVA grad Mike Freiheit enjoys working with straight ink and brush. He finds it to be a very liberating experience. As he puts it, " The black makes everything so immediately contrasted to the simplicity that is a blank piece of paper." The impression I've gotten from Mike through his work is that, like so many of us artists, we find ourselves arguing (with ourselves) about form and technique and so we realize that practice, practice, practice is the best approach (unless of course it isn't???... and the spiral continues!).
All jokes aside, Mike's got great technique. As for his choice of subject matter here Mike states, "Some of these ideas were off the top of my head, such as depicting very normal scenes juxtaposed with something a bit fantastic, to give the mundane, seemingly innocuous image a hint of awkwardness and a thread of hidden depth. Almost every thing I make you can find the humor in, hopefully." We do. Keep it up Mike. Check out his illustrations below.
